Your Provence Amazing Tours guide will arrive at your hotel or cruise ship with a comfortable air-conditioned car. You’ll be driven to the oldest neighborhood in France, the Panier, which is located just north of the Old Port in Marseille.
This is not your typical neighborhood. It is charged with 2600 years of history and shows off the character of this fabulous city. Your guide will point out the more interesting aspects of the Panier district which has become quite a hub for artists. You’ll discover some of the ancient monuments of the city along with its new National Museum, the MUCEM, the newly renovated shopping galleries, the beautiful walk around the ramparts of Fort St. Jean and the lovely arcades of la Vielle Charité (the old alms house).
We’ll taste some of Provence’s regional wines in a local’s small garden right in the heart of the Panier. In this labyrinth of narrow streets, boutiques with local food delicacies and artists’ studios intertwine.
Have you heard of the famous pastis of Marseille? You’ll meet a pastis maker who’ll take you through the steps of its production (strictly organic) followed by a tasting of the best pastis and absinthes of Provence. You’ll discover panisse, a culinary specialty which is originally from Liguria and made from chickpea flour. Along the way there will be tastings of goat cheeses, different breads, olive oils, tapenades, and various sardine and anchovy pastes.
We’ll be welcomed into a Provencal culinary workshop for more tastings and to hear some of the traditions and anecdotes of this city so symbolic of the history of France. To conclude this excursion, we’ll walk in the direction of La Major Cathedral, along the shops of the Voûtes , back to the quay of the Old Port and continuing on to the Champs Elysées of Marseille, “La Canebière”.
