What to do in Marseille, France, in 4 hours’ time? There are many things to do in Marseille!
Provence Amazing Tours has organized an efficient half-day tour where you’ll discover the highlights of Marseille in a 4-hour time frame. See the best of the oldest city in France. We’ll meet you at your hotel or cruise ship port in Marseille and drive to the heart of the city (around a 10 to 20-minute drive). Provence Amazing Tours has selected the absolutely, must-see sites in Marseille: the historic center, the most beautiful ancient buildings of the city, the promenades, the narrow streets, the lively fish market at the Old Port and the Noailles Market bursting with fresh fruits, vegetables and exotic spices from all around the Mediterranean!
Provence Amazing Tours will drive you to the highest point in Marseille to see the magnificent 360° views from the esplanade surrounding Notre Dame de la Garde Basilica. From here you’ll see the major landmarks: the Old Port, the industrial port, the coastline, the mountains, the Frioul Islands in front of Marseille and the St. Charles train station. You’ll also see the futuristic soccer stadium, le Vélodrome, the second largest in France. And we mustn’t forget la Cité Radieuse (the Radiant City), a building conceived and built by the architect Le Corbusier. This “verical village” was finished in 1952 and has been a UNESCO classified monument since 2016.
The “things to do” four hours schedule:
Provence Amazing Tours will optimize your 4-hour time frame by taking you to the best sites Marseille has to offer. While walking along the city streets, you’ll discover the traditions and customs of “Massilia”, and start to feel the general vibe and spirit of Marseille and the warm ambiance of the people of the South!
Our urban stroll of Marseille will start at the Quai des Belges and wind along the waterfront to Marseille’s City Hall. Along the way we’ll admire the most ancient buildings of the Old Town, vestiges from the Greek era and the Roman docks. Then, we’ll walk up the hill to the heart of Marseille and the oldest neighborhood in France, Le Panier! In this Provencal artist’s district, we can peek into painters galleries, ceramics and world-renowned soap-making workshops. Artisans of Santons, clay figurines representing Provencal villagers, will be happy to tell you about their trade. While here, you’ll want to taste the famous Marseille biscuits, “les navette”, with a taste of orange flower.
Then, we’ll walk up the main street, “La Canebière”, the boulevard sometimes referred to as the “Champs Elysées” of Marseille, to the “Noailles” market district; an exotic patchwork harkening back to French colonialism with goods from Maghreb, West Africa, Madagascar, the Comoros Islands, India and Asia.
Next, we’ll drive up to Notre Dame de la Garde Basilica, dear to the hearts of the Marseille people. This beautiful church and esplanade is the highest point in Marseille at 160 meters and offers breathtaking, 360° views of the city, coastline, mountains and islands. You’ll see all the major city landmarks from here, as well: the St. Charles train station, the Vélodrome soccer stadium and the Cité Radieuse by Le Corbusier.
Our last stage of the Marseille tour will be a drive along the coast road to see the rocky cliffs and sandy beaches all the way to the typical Provencal neighborhoods of Goudes and Callelongue.
